Rating: - Two stars but it's an important member of my cd family
First, the B-sides "Who Has Seen The Wind?" and "Listen, The Snow Is Falling" are two of my favorite Ono songs. Very disappointed when they weren't included on the "OnoBox" release. So to have them here makes the cd worth the price. I always liked the title "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking For Her Hand In The Snow)" but was never very enthused about the recording. Track one "John & Yoko 22:41" could almost be Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby" in s-l-o-w motion. I'm glad to have it but don't listen to it more than once a year. Track two "Amsterdam 24:54" is very difficult to listen to. Doesn't mean I'm not glad to have this interview and song (if you want to call it a song). I however, think Yoko Ono an incredible writer, artist and musician, and want to collect all that John and Yoko recorded. Call it music, call it art, call it politics, call it an "event", but it's John & Yoko singing, talking, doing what they did before and better than anyone else!
Rating: - An Interesting Idea...Only for the Brave
Yeah, I'm a Lennon junkie. So, although half of this cd disappoints (well, maybe that's not the word, but I can't think of a better one), the other half is worth listening to. I can't help but be entranced by the first track 'John and Yoko', which is nothing but the two happy lovers repeating each other's names over and over again. Boring? To some maybe, but I find it strangely affecting and have found myself listening to it over and over. The soothing sound of a heartbeat backs the track, and John's guttural screams, and soft whispers, are just as beautiful as his singing voice. The mantra continues for 20 some minutes, and ranges from trepidation to questioning, lustful, angry, inquisitive, humorous, etc. There are two particular moments I find interesting, one occurs at about 3:30, the other at 20 some minutes, the former where Yoko emits a long, loud wail, with John matching her at the same exact pitch (sends shivers down my spine!) the latter where Yoko sings in a singsong voice, with Lennon following up in the same pitch. Second track, Amsterdam, is pretty boring and meaningless, I didn't find myself paying attention to it at all. Yoko's 'Listen, the Snow is Falling' is actually a really gorgeous little song, with beautiful backing. The only thing I never could stand about her is that sometimes she is in perfect, beautiful pitch, then the next note she's horribly out of tune...how could that be? I'd rather hear her wailing and screaming than hear her trying to sing, she just isn't consistent at all. For the diehard, brave Lennon-Ono fans. I think it's worth it for the first track alone.
Rating: - A Classic
There are some really great tunes on this album. Well ... not exactly. This is one of those CDs or albums, as you like, that if you are a fan you just have to collect. My original copy is on vinyl and in a big white box. Lot's of dust on it. Got some extra money? Go ahead and get it on CD. Nobody is really looking or are they? John, you made me take a second look there for a second.
