Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - 7 of the greatest songs ever recorded, and 7 of the.......
What a great come back for John Lennon after being out of the studio for five years. The 80's would have belonged to John instead of Michael Jackson. Can you imagine the Video's John would have had on MTV,and the great music to follow this record.I love everyone of John's songs. "Beutifull Boy" has the greatest line I've ever heard in a record,"before you cross the street, take my hand, life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans." This song, writen for John's 5 year old son Sean,is so sad for me.I lost my Father at 5 also, and my heart went out to Sean when this wannabe, fat, Insect, took the greatest musician will ever have, off the planet.""Watching the Wheels"is being played for the new Michael Douglas film,"Wonder Boys." It still sounds fresh after 20 years. "Women" is a classic.John really must have loved Yoko to put 7 of his great songs, next to 7 of hers. I did play "Kiss,Kiss,Kiss," at a party, and got a great laugh. To be completly honest,Yoko's music is different, but That voice. Is that singing? I did buy "Walking on Thin Ice," and it did make the top 50 in billboard.I even bought Yoko's"Season of Glass." Talk about more pain. There is a song on the album,"Goodbye Sadness," that is beutifull.Yoko never sounded better.Phil Spector produced the song. "Double Fantasy" is a classic. I could only give it 3 stars because of Yoko's Songs.I know she has a following, and she should be able to record her music, but not next to Lennon's masterpieces.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - 20yearsOld, "DoubleFantasy" is still a Masterpiece
This should have been the greatest time in John and Yoko's life.A wonderfull album,Raising 5 year old Sean, the start of MTV,who know's what kind of music would have followed "Double Fantasy.John's songs are fantastic."Starting over," the first single released was amazing, and John got to see the record climb to Number 1.His fans were still with him after being away for five years."Women,I'm Losing you,Cleanup Time," are wonderfull cuts also, but my favorite is "Beautifull Boy," written about Sean.I love the line,"Before you cross the street, take my hand, life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans."My favorite song of Yoko's is "Kiss,Kiss,Kiss." I think this numbers a great Disco cut,and very experimental and different.I'm also glad Yoko's "Walking on Thin Ice," is included in this new version.John was murdered coming home from the studio working on the record. Its unreal, but John would have been 60 this year. The World lost 20years of wonderfull, experimental, peaceloving sounds from one of the greats.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A fine if unexpected album from Lennon
Yikes! Talk about nasty. Most of these reviewers have their sharpened knives drawn. Anyone expecting an album like Plastic Ono Band, Imagine or any of John's late Beatles material was bound to be disappointed I suppose. The whole purpose of an artist trying out new styles is to prevent stagnation and here Lennon decided to look forward by looking back.

Much of the music here is informed by the 50's influences of Lennon's youth more so than at any time (with the exception of the first couple Beatles albums) in his career. What's most refreshing about this album is that Lennon is clearly HAPPY.

That's precisely what makes this album so much fun: Lennon is having the time of his life recreating the music that he loved so much.

I've never been a Yoko fan, but she does a very good job of creating commerical rock 'n' roll. Her stuff in the past has ranged from interesting to inaccessible (think Captain Beefheart on his worst day), but here she manages to create some pop classics equal to Lennon's. All you need to do is here Elvis Costello's cover of Walking on Thin Ice or Lennon's own cover of Every Man has a Woman Who Loves Him to begin to appreciate how she molded her artier side to pop music conventions.

This isn't Lennon's best album but the sheer happiness and joy apparent in his voice and performance raise even the marginal material up to his standards. This was his first attempt to create meaningful, happy music in his life. He certainly would have progressed and changed just as he did with his more angst driven music both during and after the Beatles. A fine album that, while it doesn't measure up to POB or Imagine, on occasion matches those album's best moments.

By the way, for those that find this album a little too slick I'd recommend the single disc or mutlidisc Lennon Anthology. It features a version of I'm Losing You with half of Cheap Trick playing on it. It proves that this song (like much of this album) has power pop classics on it.
